It is by grace you are saved, through faith. It is a gift from God, not because of anything you do, so you may not boast.
~ Ephesians 2:8-9
God’s grace
Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ. All have sinned and are morally far short of the perfection of God. The love of God is not a sentimental winking at sin, as if it doesn’t matter. Jesus paid with His life to atone for our failures but, for this to be credited to your account, you must believe that it is so. Unless you accept the gift it is worthless to you.
The Bible says that saving faith is a gift from God. He chooses you, because of His mercy, and not because of any merit of your own. He opens your heart to believe.
God wants to ensure that, for the person who accepts the gift of salvation, it is a humbling experience. He leaves no grounds for personal pride and boasting. If you could earn your salvation through good deeds and religious observances then you would have something to boast about. God has removed that option. You are undeserving, but He is merciful. He gets the glory.
Spiritual transformation leads to a new life that shifts focus from self to God. Praise goes to the giver of the gift.
